Resume of Sailing Experience for:

William Mark Hardesty

Updated October 31st, 2022

Summary

Sailing experience began in 1998, chartering in the BVI and Belize with his wife Isabel, a highly experienced sailor.  Additional sailing with friends and family provided experience in the Northwest US and Canada, the Adriatic Sea in Croatia and the Mediterranean between Corfu, Greece and Rome, Italy.  The opportunity to work as paid passage crew with Captain Ian Fagg, a rated Ocean Yachtmaster / super yacht captain yielded three blue water passages between Newport, Rhode Island and either St. Maarten or Antigua on a Swan 62’ (Extraordinary, 38 tons) and a Swan 82’ (Inukshuk, 42 tons), as well as a passage from Bermuda to Split, Croatia via Horta, Azores and Palma de Mallorca, Spain on a CMB 93’ (Savarona, 84 tons).  Over 10,500 blue water nautical miles have been sailed with Captain Ian Fagg including on his own personal Bowman 40 during a passage from Vannes, France through the Morbihan Bay then across the Bay of Biscay to multiple harbors in Spain.

In 2013 Mark and Isabel purchased a 2008 year model Seawind 1160 catamaran (JollyDogs), hull # 0053 manufactured in Australia.  By June 2014 we were living aboard almost full time.  Before departing Puerto Vallarta in April 2019, we had sailed her approximately 11,000 nautical miles in US and Mexican waters, including 3 trips down Pacific Baja Mexico from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas.  We sailed as far South as Zihuatanejo on the Pacific Mexican coast, and as far North in the Sea of Cortez as Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), exploring many remote locations.

In April 2019 we sailed from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico directly to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesan islands of French Polynesia.  The 3000-mile passage took 21 days, average speed of 6 knots. Since arriving in early May 2019 we have sailed to and explored the following islands and atolls: Nuku Hiva, Ua Huka, Ua Pou, Hiva Oa, Tahuata and Fatu Hiva, all in the Marquesas.  In the Windward Society Islands both Tahiti and Moorea, and in the Leeward Society Islands, Huahine, Maupiti, Tahaa and Raiatea. In the Tuamotus, Kauehi, Fakarava, Toau, Tikehau, Tahanea, Makemo, Rarioa, Amanu and Hao. From Hao we sailed to Gambier where we explored for 2 months prior to sailing to Nuku Hiva where we prepared for our departure from French Polynesia. We sailed to the big island of Hawaii, arriving on April 30th 2021 and after 2 months of exploring the Hawaiian islands departed Kauai for the US Pacific Northwest on June 28th and arriving July 25th at Port Angles, Washington. Since departing Puerto Vallarta we’ve sailed JollyDogs an additional 15,000 miles for a total of 26,000 miles in JollyDogs since we purchased her.

We’ve experienced big tides and extremely strong tidal currents, most notably in the Gulf of Morbihan in France but also in the Northern Sea of Cortez and the passes of various atolls in the Tuamotus.  We’ve experienced big long swells in the Atlantic and Pacific, and short steep seas in the Sea of Cortez.  We’ve encountered rough weather in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Pacific and Sea of Cortez.  We’ve taken plenty of mooring balls, anchored in hundreds of bays, and sailed many multiple day passages, our longest being 28 days.  We’ve navigated between multiple coral heads inside atolls and anchored among coral heads, floating our anchor chain when necessary.  We’ve learned what points of sail on which our Seawind 1160 performs best, and what conditions are to be avoided due to the abuse to ourselves and our boat. We have sailed this vessel almost 28,000 miles, each of us having more than 30,000 blue water miles on JollyDogs and other boats.

On JollyDogs we get our weather via SSB (weatherfax), by using our SAILMAIL account to access GRIB data files, text and image forecast products, and with our Predictwind unlimited data package coupled with our Iridium Go satellite modem. We installed all the boat electronics and have upgraded the original electrical system to increase reliability and redundancy.  Most recently a conversion to Smart Plug for safer dock power hook-ups was added, along with new solar panels and wiring, new solar controllers and new inverter.

Mark is a retired Boeing Flight Test Director for high risk research programs on experimental helicopters.  He holds multiple FAA pilot ratings and has owned and maintained several aircraft.  The nature of his job demanded continuous use of a risk assessment tools and cockpit resource management methods; he employs the same when planning and executing sailing adventures.

Resume of Sailing Experience for:

Isabel Hardesty

Member, Royal Cruising Club of England

Updated October 31st, 2022

From July 1980 thru July 1991, for approximately 5 weeks each summer while growing up, Isabel sailed with her family on a Gib Sea 105, enjoying multiple crossings of the English Channel, and coastal sailing around Western and Southern France, various parts of the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands.  Isabel’s father has been an active member of the Royal Cruising Club (RCC) of England for well over 60 years and has provided instruction towards Ocean Yachtmasters credentials for Isabel and several of her college friends.  From 1991 through 1994, during summer breaks from York University, Isabel captained the family boat, bringing fellow members of the university sailing club along.  The crew made multiple crossings of the English Channel to and from Western France, as well as crossing the Irish Sea and calling upon Baltimore and other ports in Southern Ireland without her father’s presence and without mishap.

After university, Isabel briefly worked for Nigel Burgess Yacht Brokers in London, before heading off to backpack around the world.  Along the way, she found an opportunity to sign on as the sole crew for the captain of a Pacific Seacraft Crealock 37’.  From April 1995 through November 1996, Isabel found herself blue water cruising between New Zealand and Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and the East coast of Australia.  As crew, she sailed over 6000 nautical miles, with the longest passage at 1200 nautical miles.  Her cruising experience in the South Pacific included navigating to numerous remote coral reefs.  Since that time, Isabel has accrued sailing experience with her husband Mark and also as paid passage crew for Captain Ian Fagg on both SV Inukshuk (Swan 82) and SV Savarona (CMB 93).
